TARA Arts' Youth Arts & Heritage Project: Sailing to Britain

TARA Arts’ Youth Arts & Heritage Project: Sailing to Britain will culminate in a performance on a boat on the River Thames in 2012.

The project to date has been a huge success, with more than 100 young people from across London researching the hidden stories of Lascars; migrant sailors from Africa and Asia who worked on British Merchant Ships. We are currently recruiting more young people aged 14 – 22 years old to join the project.
We will be holding a 2 week workshop from Monday 26th July – Friday 6th August in Greenwich. Participation is FREE and open to anyone within the age range. No previous performing arts experience is necessary.

During the 2 weeks this summer, participants will work with Theatre Director Jules Tipton, Playwright Nicholas McInerney, as well as professional actors and musicians. They will also be working with an aerial choreographer and an aerialist to create the rigging of the ship! We are also able offer up to 5 participants the opportunity to undertake their Bronze Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification.

There will be a public performance of the participant’s work at Greenwich Theatre on Friday 6th August at 7.30pm.

This is an excellent opportunity for young people from across London to learn new skills, meet new people and be part of one of the Cultural Olympiad’s most exciting projects. I would appreciate it if you could forward this information to any young people you work with whom you think might be interested in getting involved. I have also attached 2 application forms: 1 for those under 18, and 1 for those aged 18 and over. Anyone who would like to take part should complete the appropriate form and post it to TARA using the freepost address on the form.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the project further, please feel free to call me on 020 8333 4457 or email me at this address. You can also gain more information on the project by visiting our blog: www.sailingtobritain.blogspot.com

Thank you for your time.

All the best,

Local team AFC Wimbledon U13 boys crowned best in the country

AFC Wimbledon U13 boy’s football team won the Tesco Cup English Final on this weekend at Pride Park, Derby, beating YMCA Lytham St Anne’s from Lancashire in the final. The boys, who were representing Southern England, now advance to the UK Final of the Tesco Cup at the Reebok Stadium, home of Bolton Wanderers, on Sunday May 16.

AFC Wimbledon beat Laverstock FC from Wiltshire 2-0 in the Semi final. The final against YMCA Lytham St Anne’s saw an entertaining start to the game. The Dons scored before half time following a well worked move down the right wing which culminated in a tap in for Patrick Roberts. The game was put out of reach by Wimbledon’s midfield general Jake Gill, who created enough space to score the teams second goal.

Team Manager Tony Wilson said, ‘It’s probably the proudest moment of my life, I am so thrilled for the boys, I have worked with them since under 7’s and they deserve all the credit. They have done brilliantly.’

Derby County FC striker, Rob Hulse attended the event at Pride Park and chose talented player Jack Watret from AFC Wimbledon as Defender of the Tournament, for his impressive performances throughout the day. The AFC Wimbledon team were awarded more glory as Patrick Roberts was selected as Forward of the Tournament, after some impressive play on the Dons wing, which included a goal in the final.

Rob Hulse commented: ‘The Tesco Cup is a competition I would have loved to have competed in when I was younger; it is a great experience for the youngsters to play at Pride Park for a chance to represent England. I wish the three English qualifiers the best of luck for the final of the competition.’

Tesco Cup teams have competed at County and then Regional level in a bid to reach the National Final and ultimately, to represent their country at the UK Final. Over 3,700 teams entered the 2009/10 Tesco Cup competition and just 12 teams across the age groups -U13 boys, U14 girls, U16 girls – progressed to the National final. In the U14 girls QPR girls were victorious with West Ham Girls winning the U16 girls tournament.

The Tesco Cup is part of a wider commitment from Tesco to encourage children to get involved in sport. Now in its fifth year, Tesco works in conjunction with the FA and local communities to provide young footballers with the opportunity to play in a structured competition, on a national and international stage.

The English Teams will be looking to repeat on their performances at the 2010 UK final. In 2009, teams from England won all three age groups, with Stokesley FC winning the U13 boys, Manchester City the U14 girls and Manchester United the U16 girls title.

Involved Youth Action Team

I am looking for young dynamic people aged 16-25 who may be interested in joining the vinvolved Youth Action Team in Merton. The idea of this is for young people to get the chance to speak out to their peers in their community and attract more young people aged 16-25 into volunteering. One of the ways vinvolved would like us to do this is by creating a newsletter for Merton aimed at young people aged 16-25 to get them interested and involved in volunteering. This is also the chance for you to attend meetings and events, speaking to various people and organisations within the Merton Borough. I am also looking to create any other ways to attract young people. You may want to... make posters, leaflets, have fundraising events, drama productions, or a talent show, make a DVD, or even give talks or presentations locally. No specific skills or qualifications are required but motivation, commitment and good team working skills will help. People with a creative flair and enthusiasm will be most appealing. You decide, you plan it, you make it! So, bring your ideas out into the community… Serina Matharu Youth Volunteer Advisor Vestry Hall London Road Mitcham Surrey CR4 3UD 0208 640 7355 (Ask for Serina)

FA Futsal Awareness Day, 31 Oct 2008

On the 31st October 2008 Surrey FA will be hosting a Free Futsal awareness day as part of our National Game Strategy. The event will take place at Merton Rayne’s Park High School and will run from 3pm-6pm. The event is completely FREE, and is a fantastic opportunity for young people age 11-13 years to meet new people, learn new skills and have plenty of fun. The event is open to boys and girls aged 11-13.Futsal is a FIFA Approved Brazilian adaptation of 5 a side football. It has helped develop some of today’s best players such as Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robinho and Roberto Carlos who all developed skills through the game of Futsal. Futsal is a five-a-side game, played with hockey sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce. As a small-sided game players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces and it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness Futsal is a fast, energetic exciting game, so why not come, meet new people and learn how to play.
