"If the buses really worked, would we be ready to give up the car?" That was the theme of the Wimbledon Civic Forum's Transport debate at 6.30 p.m. on Friday January 21st 2001 at St Mark's Church Hall. A panel of experts included:
Robin Young, operations director of London General Buses,
Dick Halle, head of strategy at LT buses,
Charlie King, of the London Regional Passenger Committee, and
Richard Rawes, Merton's environmental services director:
Improvements must be made to bus services if they are ever to be accepted as an alternative to the private car. Says Transport Forum chairman John Ellison "This was a chance for everyone with an idea on how to improve our bus services to chip into the debate - and for motorists who feel they are being harried to come forward and tell us exactly what sort of service would persuade them to leave the car at home".
