WIMBLEDON MUSIC FESTIVAL

From November 20th – 29th the new Wimbledon Music Festival will be playing host to the most remarkable gathering of world-class musicians in Wimbledon’s history. Long a bye-word for quality in the world of tennis, its cultural life is following suit.

No recording comes close to the experience of live music making at its very best. The Wimbledon Music Festival credo is ‘musical excellence’ – not just artists with bravura techniques, but those imbued with the capacity to ‘make music’ – to make the soul ‘sing’, to inspire, and build new audiences for the future.

The line up is truly impressive:
World renowned cellist RAPHAEL WALLFISCH; Israeli viola legend RIVKA GOLANI; multi award-winning DANTE QUARTET; Russian pianist NIKOLAI DEMIDENKO; Cardiff 'Singer of the World' CHRISTOPHER MALTMAN with pianist JULIUS DRAKE; Australian pianist PIERS LANE; American violin virtuoso JACK GLATZER; LSO Principal clarinet, ANDREW MARRINER; renowned horn player, RICHARD WATKINS; American harpsichordist MAGGIE COLE; actors HARRIET WALTER, HENRY GOODMAN, and TIMOTHY WEST. The BURNING BUSH KLEZMER BAND; the TONY KINSEY ALL STAR JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The theme for the first festival is a concentration on Masterworks: the six Bach cello suites - Schubert 'Die Winterreise', and his Octet - a programme of Russian Masterworks for Viola - Romantic Masterpieces for French Horn - Mozart's Clarinet Quintet - Mussorgsky's 'Pictures from an Exhibition' - Brahms String Sextet - Bach's 'Goldberg Variations'...

The Festival is keen to build strong roots in the community. ‘Friends’ and volunteers form the backbone of any successful festival with local pride of ownership. November is a good month to plant a Festive tree. We must hope for good audiences to nurture it, and a fertile community of music-lovers to sustain and help it grow into future seasons.
