In celebration of William Morris’s links with Merton, twelve artists are exhibiting work made in response to his legacy at the Chapter House ruins. The exhibition is open the second weekend of the Merton Arts Trail and the following weekend.
Morris & Co’s workshops were located within the precincts of the former Merton Priory, a once vast medieval monastery where now only the Chapter House site remains. Each artist has sought to give a contemporary interpretation to themes evident in Morris’s colossal output as a designer, craftsman, writer, socialist thinker and entrepreneur. A wide range of artistic media is on show, including paintings, textile hangings, photography, video, sculpture, installation art, stained glass, ceramics and screenprints, as well as performance.
Participating artists are Othman Abdullah, Jane Bailey, Wendy Bliss, Chrissie Craig, Titus Davies, Sue Evans, Julia Iwasz, Sandy Layton, Fiona Long, Helen Rawlins, Rosie Taylor and Jane Tyler. The show curators are Wendy Bliss and Sue Evans. William Morris artefacts will also be on display, including fabric samples, stained glass windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones made at the firm’s workshops and ceramics by William de Morgan, alongside objects found during the excavation of the site by the Museum of London.
